Home Safety Checklist

Most injuries suffered by children occur in and around the home. While it may not be possible to make your home completely safe at all times, you can take steps to lessen the risk of injury and make your home a safer place for children.

Kidsafe House

Kidsafe House has extensive displays on all aspects of child injury prevention. These displays feature information on toy safety, spiders and snakes, glass and outdoor safety, dog bites, falls, nursery furniture, playground safety, poisonings, burns, scalds, road and water safety. There is a fully working kitchen and bathroom as well as a poisonous plants garden. A large range of child injury prevention products are on display with most products in stock and available for purchase at our Kidsafe shop.

Injury prevention and first aid instruction

Starting with a guided tour of Kidsafe House, followed by morning tea then get into practical first aid including CPR for babies and toddlers, what to do for near drownings, burns, poisonings and more. $120 per person payable in advance.

These sessions are recommended for pregnant couples, parents, grandparents, babysitters and other carers of children. Starting time is 9am. Minimum numbers apply. Call Kidsafe Qld on 3854 1829 to book and pay. First aid instruction is provided by a properly qualified first aid instructor who also has 20 years experience in children's emergency departments.

Topics include: *The top injuries presenting to Queensland hospitals and how these can be prevented. *Safety products and ideas for securing your home. *Nursery furniture and toys – hazards and how to avoid injury. *Correct use of strollers, high chairs and other equipment. *Safe sleeping. *Child restraints – the new rules and the correct use of restraints. *Kidsafe resources. *Resuscitation (CPR for babies and toddlers using practice mannequins). *Drowning. *Choking, fevers and febrile convulsions. *Burns and scalds. *Breathing difficulties. *Head injuries. *Severe allergic reactions and the use of EpiPens. *Poisons. *Bites and stings.

Guided tours

Available for a small charge for groups with a minimum number of 10. Guided tours are by appointment only either in working hours or after hours. Guided tours take approximately 2 hours @ $12 per head.

Self-guided tours

Available free of charge and staff are on hand to help with any queries time permitting.

Kidsafe House is situated adjacent to the UQ Oral health Centre at 50 Bramston Terrace, Herston. Opening hours are Monday - Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm. Limited parking is available outside Kidsafe House.
