Safety in Schools Week 2012 PDF Print E-mail

Date Claimer June 12-15th 2012.

Preventable injuries are the number one killer of Australian children. The second most prevalent area for injuries after the home is the school.

Please join other Primary and Middle schools in Queensland to celebrate safety within your school and get your students thinking about safety with a variety of fun activities and great prizes!

We have set out an example week of planned activities:

TUESDAY: Road Safety Day Road Safety Day. Students design a road safety poster (Prizes) - Discuss road safety, walk around the adjoining school roads and driveways, look at hazards, dangers, zebra crossings, visibility, bike safety etc and Sport Safety Day Students design a safety mascot for your school and enter a state-wide competition to design the first Kidsafe Qld Safety Mascot. (Prizes) - Discuss sport safety and safety equipment.

WEDNESDAY: School Safety Day. Kooky Kidsafe Socks day. (gold coin donation to Kidsafe Qld) Discuss school safety. Walk around the classroom, ovals and playgrounds and find 9 things which are unsafe, or potentially unsafe. Students become safety inspectors. This becomes a pseudo safety audit for the school to act on information provided by the students.

THURSDAY: Water Safety Day. Colouring in competition provided. (Prizes). If your school has a pool, go to the pool and from the checklist provided, check on all pool safety aspects - CPR chart, chemicals, slippery floors, fencing, edging, stands, rescue equipment, etc.

FRIDAY: Cyber Safety Day. Child safety computer game school challenge. (Inter-school challenge.) (Prizes) Software will be provided as a free trial copy for purpose of the competition. Got to Edsoft for more information on the software.

All participating schools are awarded a Safety Certificate from Kidsafe Queensland. All participating students are awarded a Safety Certificate from Kidsafe.  Students are provided with Kidsafe home safety checklists to take home and see if they can make their homes safer by identifying hazards.

You will be notified when the full Safety in Schools Week 2012 kit will be available on the Kidsafe Qld website.

NB: A Safety in Schools week program has been successfully running in hundreds of schools in WA for the past 13 years and we want Queensland schools and Queensland students to be 'As Safe As Possible' (ASAP) in 2012.
